Flame retardant for Polypropylene
Polypropylene is a thermoplastic resin prepared by the polymerization of propylene. They are divided into three categories: isotactic polypropylene, atactic polypropylene and syndiotactic polypropylene according to the arrangement of methyl groups.
The arrangement of methyl groups on the same side of the molecular chain is called isotactic polypropylene. If the arrangement of the methyl group is not arranged on the two sides of the main chain, it is called atactic polypropylene, and when the methyl group is arranged alternately on both sides of the main chain, syndiotactic polypropylene is called. In general industrial polypropylene resins, the isotactic structure content is about 95%, and the rest is atactic or syndiotactic polypropylene. Industrial products are mainly composed of isotactic substances.
Polypropylene also includes copolymers of propylene and a small amount of ethylene. Usually translucent, colorless solid, odorless, non-toxic. The melting point can be as high as 167 degrees due to the high crystallinity of the structure. Heat resistance, corrosion resistance, steam disinfection products are its outstanding advantages. It's the lightest, universal plastic. The disadvantage is that it has low temperature shock resistance and is easy to aging, but can be overcome by modification.
In the past 10 years, the development, production and application of polypropylene flame retardants have been developing rapidly in the world, especially in china. The production of phosphorus containing polypropylene flame retardant in China has increased rapidly, and has become the largest product of polypropylene flame retardant.
At the same time, kind of flame retardant Chinese production and consumption are increasing, R & D, production and application of covering the international market sales of organic phosphorus flame retardant (such as bisphenol A bis (two phenyl phosphate) (BDP), resorcinol bis (two phenyl phosphate) (RDP) and for epoxy printed circuit board DOPO) and inorganic phosphorus and nitrogen (such as high degree of polymerization of ammonium polyphosphate, melamine salt) and other products.
With the domestic market growth and export increase, it is estimated that by 2017, the national phosphorus flame retardant production will reach 450 thousand tons, the production capacity will exceed 600 thousand tons. Among them, the production of phosphorus based flame retardant in Jiangsu Zhejiang area is developing rapidly with the development of halogen-free flame retardant, forming a phosphorus flame retardant production zone.
As China has mastered the basic production technology of most phosphorus containing flame retardants and has low production costs, it has gradually become a large producer of phosphorus containing flame retardants, which has impacted on the original international pattern of phosphorus containing flame retardants.

Flame retardant TPP has many advantages, such as excellent transparency, softness, bacterial resistance, and water proof, grease-proof, good electric insulation, as well as good compatibility. Flame retardant TPP is mainly used as the flame-retardant plasticizer for cellulose resin, vinyl resin, natural rubber and synthetic rubber. And it may also be used as the flame-retardant plasticizer for glyceryl triacetate thin ester and film, rigid polyurethane foam, phenolic aldehyde resin, and PPO, etc.
Flame retardant TPP is a kind of halogen-free environment-friendly flame retardant with phosphorus element. Most of the products in the market are self-colored flaky crystal, our product is self-colored crystalline powder, and is more soluble in organic solvents. TPP is not soluble in water, but soluble in benzene, chloroform, ether and acetone, and slightly soluble in Z alcohol. Flame retardant TPP is nonflammable with slight aromatic odor and slight deliquescence. The fusion point is about 50 ℃, and fast melts to hoop-shape when heated. The lubricate effect is excellent, and it is often used as the flame retardant plasticize lubricant. What is more, it is used as the flame retardant for many plastics and resins, such as phenolic aldehyde resin, epoxy resin and so on.
China is the largest producer of flame retardant, in 2012 the national production of about 700 thousand tons, is currently engaged in the production and trade of flame retardant about 3180 enterprises, the production of approximately 1850 companies, mostly located in the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta and other economically developed areas, convenient transportation. These enterprises flame retardant research and development, production and application covers a wide range. It is worth mentioning that the main enterprises in Jiangsu are phosphorus based flame retardants, while brominated flame retardants are the main ones in Shandong, and there are more kinds of flame retardants in Guangdong.
As the non renewable resources continue to decrease, substitutes are difficult to appear in time. The price of brominated flame retardants and antimony oxide remains high, which will continue to lead to the rapid growth of phosphorus containing flame retardants. And the development of downstream real estate and electronic and electrical equipment put forward higher requirements for flame retardant, but also led to the continuous growth of phosphorus flame retardants and APP. In the next few years, the market consumption of phosphorus containing flame retardants will grow at a rate of 14%, and the consumption will reach 340 thousand tons by 2017.
And the further development of China's fire retardant coating market, the demand for APP will continue to grow steadily. At the same time, some products will continue to be small scale applications in polypropylene and fiber flame retardant, but if APP water absorption technology problems can be solved, the application prospect in polypropylene and engineering plastics and other flame retardant market is immeasurable.
Flame retardant textiles except for protective clothing, can also be used in other fields, such as: (1) industrial textiles, used for high temperature filtration, railway, automobile, aviation and other transportation departments of the tarpaulin, tents, housing and other earthquake relief activities. (2) interior decoration materials, such as carpets, curtains and decorative fabrics used in hotels, restaurants and dance halls. (3) interior decoration materials for transportation, such as aircraft, train and other seat fabrics, high-grade car carpet, roof, seat cushion, etc..
At present, the domestic car industry is developing vigorously, so the automobile interior decoration material will become a big market of flame retardant fabric. Flame retardant clothing has the function of flame suppression, can meet the EN470, EN533 and other flame retardant standard requirements, but also has high strength and abrasion resistance. In addition to meeting all the indicators of flame retardant clothing, it also has ultra-low shrinkage, can improve comfort, and improved appearance. This kind of flame retardant clothing will be widely used in various industrial sectors, including marine oil industry, chemical production and other departments.
Expandable graphite is a new halogen free flame retardant. It is acidified by concentrated sulfuric acid from natural graphite, then washed, filtered and dried, and then expanded under 900-1000C.
The initial temperature of expansion of expandable graphite is about 220C. It begins to expand slightly at 220C and expands rapidly after 230-280C, and then the volume can reach 100 times or 280 times as much as before.
Expandable graphite flame retardant process mainly in the following: (1) the formation of carbon layer tough on polymer surface, the combustible material separated from the heat source; (2) a lot of heat in the expansion process, reduce the temperature of the system; (3) the release of ions in the interlayer in the expansion process, the promotion of dehydration carbide, and the combination of combustion generated free radicals thereby interrupting the chain reaction. The expandable graphite can be used in coordination with phosphorus compounds and metal oxides, and the flame retardant can be achieved by adding small amount of them.
